Burkeanism

A historical and scientific approach to society

What This Section Is About

I'm a Burkean, and basically no one knows what that is.

Properly, I should just call myself a "conservative", but that's loaded up with so many connotations and ideas that just don't apply to me, so I don't use that term. For example, I am not particularly religious (though some people might wrongly get that impression), nor am I against many hot button "cultural issues".

Some people would call me a "Classical Liberal", but saying that shows that you either don't understand Burkeanism, or you don't understand Classical Liberalism.

To put it in simple terms, Burkeans believe:

  1. Each country is unique, and has its own ideal legal system, based on cultural ideas, preferences, and history.
  2. That we can learn what policies and attitudes are helpful and harmful to a country by looking at the past effects of these policies, or ones similar to them. This applies to laws, social attitudes, forms of governance, and so on.
  3. Humans adapt slowly, and the results of changes sometimes take decades to manifest. Therefore, change should be slow and incremental to the extent possible. Which also implies that when there is a shock, returning things as close to normal as possible, as quickly as possible, is essential.

I'll write my own series on this at some point, but that point is not today.
